European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
