Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
