Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, aside from his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
